Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building University of Iowa
The Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building (PBDB) is the third building of the Biomedical Research Center on the Health Science Campus of the University of Iowa, forming a new courtyard with the existing Medical Education Research Building and the Carver Biomedical Research Building. The facility will have dramatic views eastward to the central University of Iowa campus over the beautiful Iowa River. The building is being designed contextually with its predecessor buildings in the complex, but will present a more iconic overall architectural appearance as it overlooks the central campus and University.
The focus of this nine story 200,000 square-foot structure will be interdisciplinary research in the broad areas of Neuroscience, Aging and Regenerative Medicine. As well, there is a strong imaging core for human/large animal imaging being more alpha/beta testing and the small animal imaging being more research production modalities. The facility includes wet research laboratories, office space, vivarium and central core facilities making the building a destination point for research related imaging created through the Iowa Institute of Biomedical Imaging.
The IIBD facility is part of a larger University of Iowa effort to bring together scientists from multiple disciplines to pursue research leading to new treatments for patients, create new educational opportunities for students, and bolster Iowa's economy through new jobs and business partnerships. The total project budget is estimated at $122.5 million dollars.
